Introduction
ADSL provides high-speed, alway-on internet connectivity over normal phone lines. With microfilters correctly installed, this doesn't affect the phone line's voice functionality.Configuration details

Hardware to use
If you have chosen an engineer installed service, an appropriate device will be provided. If you are on a 'wires only' service you will need to buy your own hardware. There are two main options:
USB ADSL Modem
These devices plug into a USB port, and provice ADSL connectivity to a single computer. They are the preferred option for connecting a single Windows computer to ADSL. Using these on Linux is possible, but for advanced users only.
ADSL Router
These devices plug directly into an ethernet network. They provide network address translation (NAT), which allows multiple computers to share a single IP address. This is the preferred option for connecting multiple computers to a single ADSL connection, and also the easiest way to connect non-Windows computers to ADSL.
ADSL Routers tend to be more expensive than ADSL modems.
As well as USB devices, there are several ADSL PCI Cards on the market.
Connecting to the Phone Line
The modem or router connects to the phone line just like any similar device.However, when ADSL is in use, every other device on that line needs to have a microfilter installed for normal voice operation. Most ADSL devices come with a single microfilter, and it's usual practice to ensure all voice devices are wired through this.
